Longido’s Contribution to their Water Project

August 24, 2010

La Chica was delighted to find out that despite losing 90% of their livestock (and therefore livelihood) during the three year drought that has devasted Longido, the villagers of Longido have managed to join together to raise the equivalent of US$600 towards the cost of their water project.  Olengunin explained to La Chica that rather than giving her cash they will be giving her 30 goats and two big cows as their contribution!  La Chica is a little concerned that to realise the assets they are providing she’ll need to attend the local cattle and goat livestock markets and negotiate prices using the Masai hand signals they use for communicating numbers, although she’s also a little relieved that sign language will suffice as her Maa language skills are not at the level required to successfully sell 32 live animals.

    That’s fantastic … if a little challenging!
