Birthday celebrations in Longido

January 7, 2010

La Chica celebrated her birthday in Longido.  The morning was like any other (milking the cows and goats, chai…) and then she accompanied Namnyak, Nongipa, Oleborlala, Leyo and Bahati into the foothills of Mt Longido to collect sticks for hut making.

Namnyak prepared a special meal for La Chica, making chapattis, rice and potatoes, spinach, accompanied by some fruit.  The children were given a special treat of orange cordial, lollies and chocolate biscuits. The children sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to La Chica, and performed many other songs for her.  The women joined in, and soon La Chica was singing along with the Masai songs, and learning the dance moves that go with them.  La Chica seems to have lost any inhibitions she may have had.  Let’s hope she can be socialised back to normal behaviour when she returns to Australia in a few months time.
